Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking Overview

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking package is a breathtaking 12-day trek in Nepal that takes you deep into the Gokyo Valley — one of the most serene and spectacular corners of the entire Everest region. This is the road less travelled, and it rewards you for it.

The trek is known as “The Emerald Journey.” It winds through ancient Sherpa villages, across high glacial moraines, and alongside a chain of sacred turquoise lakes that shimmer at over 4,700 metres. The Nepal Tourism Board recognises Gokyo Valley as one of Nepal’s most pristine trekking destinations — part of Sagarmatha National Park and a protected Ramsar wetland site of international importance.

The trail is quieter than the main Everest Base Camp route, but the rewards are just as grand. From the summit of Gokyo Ri at 5,357m, you stand face to face with four of the world’s eight-thousanders — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — spread across the horizon in one of the most extraordinary panoramas on Earth.

The Gokyo Lakes themselves are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and the valley carries a spiritual stillness that stays with you long after the trek is done. This is Nepal trekking at its most beautiful and most peaceful.

The Trekking Route

The adventure begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla. From there, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River valley north through Phakding and Namche Bazaar — the legendary Sherpa capital of the Khumbu region — before branching west into the Gokyo Valley.

Above Namche, the route climbs through the high pasture settlements of Dole and Machhermo, with the Ngozumpa Glacier — the longest glacier in the Himalayas — emerging as a vast river of ice to the east. An acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar gives your body the time it needs before pushing higher into the valley.

The highest overnight point is Gokyo village at around 4,790m, set beside the third and largest of the Gokyo Lakes. From here, the hike to Gokyo Ri at 5,357m delivers a 360-degree panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Ama Dablam that photographers and mountain lovers travel from around the world to witness.

This trek is perfectly suited for fit beginners, experienced hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a quieter, more intimate Everest region experience. If you want to push further, our Everest Three Pass Trek combines Gokyo with the full high-pass circuit. Or, for the classic route, our Everest Base Camp Trek remains one of the great trekking adventures on Earth.

Details Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Your adventure begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Our representative will be waiting to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel — your first taste of Nepali hospitality before the mountains even begin.

The rest of the day is yours to settle in, freshen up, and take in the energy of this remarkable city. In the evening, your guide will sit down with you for a trek briefing — covering the Lukla flight, permits, route, daily walking hours, gear, altitude safety, and everything you need to feel confident and prepared for the days ahead.

Altitude: Kathmandu – 1,300m / 4,260ft Transfer Time: Approx. 30–45 minutes

  • Lodging: Hotel in Kathmandu
  • Inclusions: Welcome Dinner

Day 02: Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

The day starts early. You head to the airport before dawn for the flight to Lukla — one of the most dramatic mountain landings in the world. The short flight threads through the Himalayan foothills before the runway appears on the edge of a clifftop, the peaks of the Khumbu rising behind it. It never gets old.

If it is peak season, your flight may operate from Manthali / Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu. Your team will confirm the final plan in advance.

After landing in Lukla, you meet your trekking crew — your guide, porters, and support staff who will be with you every step of the way from here. Then the trail begins. The first walking day is intentionally gentle, easing you into the rhythm of the trek with a pleasant downhill walk through green hillsides, traditional villages, prayer wheels, and mani walls carved with ancient Buddhist scripture.

By the time you reach Phakding and settle into your first tea house of the trek, the Himalayas are already all around you.

Altitude: Lukla – approx. 2,840m / 9,318ft | Phakding – approx. 2,610m / 8,563ft Flight / Trek Time: Flight approx. 30–35 minutes | Trek approx. 3–4 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar

After breakfast, the trail picks up alongside the Dudh Koshi River and the real Khumbu experience begins. The path crosses and recrosses the river on a series of high suspension bridges — some of the longest and most exhilarating in Nepal — with glacial water thundering through the gorge far below and prayer flags strung above your head in every colour.

The route winds through the quiet villages of Monjo and Jorsale before reaching the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Permits are checked here, and from this point on you are walking inside one of the most protected and celebrated mountain landscapes on Earth.

After lunch, the trail turns upward for the long climb to Namche Bazaar. It is the day’s main challenge — a sustained ascent through pine forest that tests your legs and your lungs in equal measure. On a clear day, a gap in the treeline reveals the unmistakable summit pyramid of Everest for the first time, peering over the ridgeline ahead. Stop. Take a breath. That view never gets old.

At the top of the climb, Namche Bazaar bursts into life. This legendary Sherpa town sits in a natural horseshoe amphitheatre carved into the hillside, packed with lodges, cafés, bakeries, gear shops, and some of the best mountain views of any town on Earth. Welcome to the heart of the Khumbu.

Altitude: Namche Bazaar – approx. 3,440m / 11,286ft Trek Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 04: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

Today you stay in Namche — but staying still is not the plan. Proper acclimatization means climbing high and sleeping low, so the morning begins with a short hike above the town to help your body adjust to the altitude before the trail pushes higher tomorrow.

The most popular option is the hike up to the famous Everest View Hotel, the highest placed hotel in the world, where the terrace looks out over one of the greatest mountain panoramas imaginable — Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and a dozen other peaks filling the skyline from left to right. The nearby villages of Syangboche, Khumjung, and Khunde are also worth exploring, offering a quieter, more local side of Sherpa life away from the bustle of the main trail.

After the morning hike you descend back to Namche, lungs a little stronger and legs well warmed up. The afternoon is yours — browse the colourful market stalls, pick up any last-minute gear, find a bakery with good coffee and a view, or simply rest at the tea house and watch the mountains do what they do best.

Tomorrow the Gokyo trail begins in earnest.

Altitude: Namche Bazaar – approx. 3,440m / 11,286ft Activity Time: Approx. 3–4 hours light hike

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole

After breakfast, you leave Namche behind and the trail splits away from the busy Everest Base Camp route. Almost immediately, the path feels different — quieter, wilder, and more your own. This is one of the great pleasures of the Gokyo Valley trail.

The morning climb through Kyangjuma rewards you with sweeping views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and the full sweep of the Khumbu peaks stretching across the horizon. The trail rises to Mong La, where a tea house perched on the ridge offers one of the finest viewpoints of the entire lower route, before descending steeply through pine and rhododendron forest to the river crossing at Phortse Tenga.

From Phortse Tenga, the trail turns upward again — a long, steady climb through forest and open hillside that tests your altitude legs as the air grows noticeably thinner. The surrounding peaks grow taller with every step, and the silence of the valley closes in around you in the best possible way.

By the time you reach Dole, you have well and truly left the crowds behind. The small cluster of tea houses sits on an open hillside at over 4,200m, with nothing but mountains, sky, and the sound of the wind for company.

Altitude: Dole – approx. 4,200m / 13,780ft Trek Time: Approx. 6–7 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 06: Trek from Dole to Machhermo

After breakfast, the trail climbs gradually out of Dole and into the open highland landscape that defines the upper Gokyo Valley. The trees are largely behind you now. Ahead lies a world of wide skies, rocky ridgelines, and vast mountain panoramas that seem to expand with every step.

The path passes through small seasonal settlements and yak grazing pastures, where the only sounds are the wind, the distant clang of yak bells, and the crunch of your boots on the trail. Up here, the scale of the Himalayas becomes truly apparent — the peaks are enormous, the valleys are deep, and the sky is a shade of blue you simply do not see at lower altitude.

The air is noticeably thinner today. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and resist the temptation to push the pace. The mountains reward patience, and there is no scenery in the world worth rushing through.

Machhermo is a small, welcoming mountain village that sits as a natural staging post before the Gokyo Lakes. It is an important place to listen to your body, rest well, and make sure you are feeling strong before the trail climbs higher tomorrow.

Altitude: Machhermo – approx. 4,470m / 14,665ft Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 07: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo

After breakfast, the trail pushes on into the upper valley and the landscape shifts into something altogether more dramatic. The path climbs through rocky alpine terrain, crossing glacial streams and winding between ancient moraines, with the Ngozumpa Glacier — the longest glacier in the entire Himalayas — beginning to reveal itself as a vast frozen highway to the east.

Then the first lake appears.

Even after days of extraordinary scenery, the Gokyo Lakes stop you in your tracks. The water is an impossible shade of turquoise — deep, clear, and utterly still on a calm day — set against the raw grey rock of the surrounding peaks and the brilliant blue of the high-altitude sky. These lakes are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and standing beside them it is not hard to understand why.

The trail passes the lower lakes one by one before Gokyo village comes into view, nestled on the shore of the third and largest lake at nearly 4,800 metres. It is one of the most beautiful places in the entire Everest region — a handful of tea houses reflected in emerald water, ringed by glaciers and giants.

You made it to Gokyo. Tomorrow, you go higher.

Altitude: Gokyo – approx. 4,790m / 15,715ft Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 08: Hike to Gokyo Ri and Explore Gokyo Lakes

The alarm goes off before dawn. You layer up in the dark, step out into the cold mountain air, and begin the climb to Gokyo Ri.

The ascent takes around two hours — a steady, breathless push up the steep ridge above the village, with the lakes glowing softly in the early light far below. At 5,357m, the summit opens up into one of the most extraordinary panoramas in the Himalayas. Four of the world’s eight-thousanders stand before you at once — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — spread across the horizon in a wall of ice and rock that fills your entire field of vision. The Gokyo Lakes shimmer emerald and turquoise in the valley below. The Ngozumpa Glacier stretches away to the south. On a clear morning, there is simply nowhere else on Earth quite like this.

Take your time at the top. This is the moment the entire trek has been building toward.

After descending back to Gokyo for a well-earned breakfast, the rest of the day belongs to the valley. Walk along the lakeshore, explore the upper lakes if your legs are willing, or simply sit beside the water and let the silence and the scale of it all wash over you. Few places in the world offer this kind of stillness.

Altitude: Gokyo Ri – 5,357m / 17,575ft | Gokyo – approx. 4,790m / 15,715ft Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours for Gokyo Ri hike | Extra time for lake exploration

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 09: Trek from Gokyo to Dole

After breakfast, you take one last look at the lakes, shoulder your daypack, and begin the journey back down the valley. There is always something bittersweet about turning away from a place like Gokyo — but the trail home through this extraordinary landscape is a fine consolation.

The descent retraces the route through the upper valley, and it is worth slowing down to appreciate it all over again from the other direction. The turquoise lakes catch the morning light differently on the way back. The peaks shift and rearrange themselves as your perspective changes. The yak pastures, rocky moraines, and wide open highland scenery that felt so new on the way up now feel familiar and deeply satisfying.

With the altitude working in your favour, breathing comes easier and the legs move more freely. The valley unwinds beneath you at a comfortable pace, passing the small settlements and grazing pastures of the upper Gokyo trail before the path drops back into the hillside above Dole.

By the time you reach the tea house and settle in for the evening, the summit of Gokyo Ri is already a memory you will carry for a long time.

Altitude: Dole – approx. 4,200m / 13,780ft Trek Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10: Trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar

After breakfast, the trail drops steeply from Dole back down to Phortse Tenga, where the river crossing marks the start of the climb back toward the main valley. The route winds up through Mong La and Kyangjuma, delivering some of the finest farewell views of the entire trek — Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku lining the horizon one last time as the Gokyo Valley recedes behind you.

As you descend, the landscape visibly softens. The rocky alpine terrain of the upper valley gives way to pine and rhododendron forest, the air grows richer with every hundred metres lost, and the simple pleasure of breathing without effort returns like an old friend.

Namche Bazaar appears on the hillside ahead, as busy and welcoming as ever. After days in the quiet upper valley, the town feels almost metropolitan — and tonight that is exactly what you need. Find a bakery with fresh cinnamon rolls and proper coffee, treat yourself to a hot shower if one is available, and let the legs rest properly for the first time in days.

You are nearly back. But not quite yet.

Altitude: Namche Bazaar – approx. 3,440m / 11,286ft Trek Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla

After breakfast, you lace up your boots for the final time and begin the last day on the trail. The descent from Namche back down to the Dudh Koshi River valley is long but joyful — every step feels lighter knowing what you have accomplished in the days behind you.

The path follows familiar ground through Jorsale and Monjo, back into Sagarmatha National Park for one last time, and then along the river through Phakding and the string of small villages that welcomed you on Day 2. The suspension bridges that felt so daunting at the start of the trek now swing beneath your feet with easy confidence. The prayer flags, mani walls, and mountain views are just as beautiful on the way out as they were on the way in.

The final climb up to Lukla is the last push — a short but sharp ascent that the trail seems to save deliberately for the end, just to remind you that the mountains always have the last word. But when you walk through the gate into Lukla, the sense of achievement is immense.

Tonight you celebrate. You trekked to Gokyo Ri at 5,357m, stood above four of the world’s highest peaks, and walked every step of one of the most beautiful routes in the Himalayas. That deserves a good dinner and a well-earned rest.

Altitude: Lukla – approx. 2,840m / 9,318ft Trek Time: Approx. 6–7 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu / Final Departure

The final morning begins early. You head to Lukla airport as the mountains catch the first light of dawn — one last look at the Khumbu peaks before the flight takes you back to the world below.

The short mountain flight to Kathmandu is as dramatic on the return as it was on the way in, the Himalayan foothills rolling away beneath you as the city appears in the valley ahead. If flights are operating from Manthali, your team will have everything arranged — the landing is followed by a scenic drive back to Kathmandu through the hills and river valleys of central Nepal.

Back in Kathmandu, the city buzzes around you with its familiar noise and colour. After twelve days in the silence of the high mountains, it feels like stepping back into a different world entirely.

If your international flight departs tomorrow, an extra night in Kathmandu is strongly recommended — it gives you a comfortable buffer against any delays and a proper chance to rest, reflect, and explore the city before heading home.

Your Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking adventure ends here. Twelve days, four eight-thousanders on the horizon, sacred turquoise lakes, Sherpa villages, glaciers, and views that no photograph will ever fully capture. The mountains gave you everything — and the memories will last a lifetime.

Altitude: Kathmandu – 1,300m / 4,260ft Flight / Drive Time: Flight approx. 30–35 minutes | Manthali drive approx. 4–5 hours

  • Lodging: Not Included unless extra night is booked
  • Inclusions: Breakfast

An amazing experience – went trekking with 14 others in March / April 2025 and had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Badri and his crew for taking care of every logistical detail; flights, hotels, transportation in Kathmandu, transportation to and from the airport, money exchanges, restaurant reservations, sightseeing, optimal route pacing, gear transportation, and 100 other small details that would have left me flummoxed.

He and his team allow for a trek that’s as simplified as possible, you can focus your energy on getting to base camp, and they do everything else. They even bring you hot towels and lemon ginger tea at the end of each day (every morning too). I can’t say enough good things about the porters / guides, they were unbelievable, true heroes of our trip. We had some very unique challenges in our group, and without expert guides and porters we would absolutely not have had the same high quality experience. When I go back to Nepal for a second trek, I’m calling Badri. Badri is the guide you want – generous, personal, and you can tell he and his team deeply care about the well-being of their clients.

One more thing: Not once, but twice, Badri got our entire group flown from Kathmandu to Lukla (and back) on days when the weather was uncooperative. Both times, there was only a brief window when the clouds cleared — just enough for a single plane to make the journey — and guess whose plane was first in line? Even more impressive: while we were waiting at the airport, Badri already had a backup helicopter option lined up, just in case the planes didn’t fly. This kind of foresight and preparation gave us total peace of mind.

An incredible hike with an amazing group of people. Badri managed to get us in and out of Lukla on days when we thought flights may not be possible and he tried his very best to accommodate the needs of the group. The team of porters supporting Karen Darke were out of this world and did an incredible job, with big smiles. Wonderful people. The trek itself was incredible and we had fantastic weather during the whole trip. Although the ‘B Team’ snail ed it, we had an excellent adventure thanks to Badri and his very supportive team.

Badri and his team of wonderful porters organised and supported our amazing trek to Everest Base Camp in March/April 2025.
Helped by good weather, we had the most wonderful experience and each person within the group brought something special to what was a truly unique and awe inspiring experience. The porters (the Basnet family and others from the same village) were outstanding. Thankyou so much to everyone who played a part in what was a very memorable and emotional trip.
