Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek – 22 Days

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is a complete 22-day restricted-area trekking package in Nepal that combines two of the most beautiful and culturally rich Himalayan routes: the sacred Tsum Valley Trek and the adventurous Manaslu Circuit Trek. This journey takes trekkers through deep river valleys, hidden Tibetan Buddhist villages, ancient monasteries, remote mountain settlements, high alpine landscapes, and the famous Larkya La Pass.

This trek begins in Kathmandu and follows the Budhi Gandaki River valley toward Machha Khola, Jagat, Lokpa, Chumling, Chhokangparo, Nile, and Mu Gompa. After exploring the sacred Tsum Valley, the route rejoins the Manaslu Circuit trail through Deng, Namrung, Lho, Sama Gaon, Samdo, Dharamsala, Larkya La Pass, Bimthang, Tilije, Dharapani, and back to Kathmandu.

The highest point of the trek is Larkya La Pass at around 5,106m / 16,752ft, widely described as the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The trek also visits Mu Gompa, one of the major spiritual highlights of the upper Tsum Valley, commonly listed around 3,700m.

The route offers views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Annapurna II, and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Nepal Tourism Board describes Manaslu Conservation Area as a trekking area with authentic culture, lodges, views of Manaslu and other Himalayan peaks, and old mountain lifestyles that have changed little over centuries.

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek – 22 Days is suitable for experienced trekkers, fit adventure travelers, cultural travelers, photographers, spiritual travelers, and international trekkers from the USA, Australia, Canada, Europe, Asia, and worldwide who want a guided restricted-area trekking package with local experts.

Why Choose Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is one of the best long trekking adventures in Nepal for travelers who want both culture and high mountain adventure. It combines the sacred hidden Tsum Valley with the dramatic Manaslu Circuit and the challenging Larkya La Pass.

The Tsum Valley section is famous for Tibetan Buddhist villages, ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer flags, Milarepa Cave, Rachen Gompa, and Mu Gompa. The Manaslu Circuit section offers bigger mountain scenery, high-altitude villages, glacier landscapes, and the dramatic crossing of Larkya La Pass.

Best Time for Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek

The best time for the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is spring and autumn.

Spring, from March to May, is a beautiful season for this trek. The lower forests become green and colorful, the weather is generally warmer, and the mountain views are often clear in the morning. Higher areas such as Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larkya La Pass can still be cold, especially early and late in the day.

Autumn, from September to November, is the most popular trekking season. After the monsoon, the sky is usually clearer, the air feels fresh, and the mountain views are sharp. Nepal Tourism Board lists March–May and September–November as the best seasons for Manaslu Conservation Area.

The trek can also be possible in December and February for experienced trekkers with proper winter equipment, but snow and ice may affect Larkya La Pass. Monsoon season from June to August is less recommended because rain, landslides, clouds, leeches, and slippery trails can affect the lower Budhi Gandaki valley.

Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek Difficulty

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is a challenging trek. It is more demanding than the short Tsum Valley Trek because this route continues over Larkya La Pass and includes long walking days, high altitude, remote trails, and cold alpine conditions.

Trekkers should be prepared for uphill and downhill walking, rocky trails, suspension bridges, narrow paths, basic mountain lodges, long trekking days of around 5 to 8 hours, and one very long pass-crossing day. The Larkya La Pass day is the hardest part of the trek because trekkers start early from Dharamsala, cross the high pass, and descend to Bimthang.

Good physical fitness, previous hiking experience, proper acclimatization, warm clothing, trekking boots, hydration, and travel insurance covering high-altitude emergency evacuation are very important.

This trek is best for experienced trekkers or fit beginners with strong preparation and a positive attitude.

Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek Permits

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is a restricted-area trek, so trekkers need special permits and must trek with a licensed guide through an authorized trekking agency. Nepal’s Department of Immigration states that restricted areas are highly regulated, FIT / free individual trekking is not allowed in such areas, and restricted-area trekking requires proper agency arrangements.

For this 22-day package, trekkers normally need:

• Manaslu Restricted Area Permit / Manaslu RAP
• Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit / Tsum RAP
• Manaslu Conservation Area Permit / MCAP
• Annapurna Conservation Area Permit / ACAP
• TIMS Card as per current trekking rules
• Licensed trekking guide

The Department of Immigration lists Gorkha Manaslu Area permit fees as USD 100 per person per week from September to November, plus USD 15 per person per day beyond one week; and USD 75 per person per week from December to August, plus USD 10 per person per day beyond one week. It also lists Gorkha Tsum Valley Area fees as USD 40 per person per week from September to November, plus USD 7 per person per day beyond one week; and USD 30 per person per week from December to August, plus USD 7 per person per day beyond one week.

NTNC’s official e-permit page lists the conservation area entry fee as NRs. 3,000 for foreigners and NRs. 1,000 for SAARC nationals, tax included, and states that the permit must be carried during the entire trip and shown when requested.

Nepal Tourism Board lists Manaslu Circuit Trek, Manaslu – Tsum Valley Trek, and Tsum Valley Trek under the routes where trekkers need a licensed trekking guide and a trekking-agency-issued TIMS Card. NTB also lists TIMS charges as NPR 1,000 for SAARC applicants and NPR 2,000 for others.

Your trekking agency should arrange all required permits, guide, transportation, accommodation, and logistics before the trek begins.

Depending on weather and group condition, you can hike toward Manaslu Base Camp, Pungyen Gompa, or Birendra Lake. The hike helps with acclimatization and gives excellent views of Manaslu, glaciers, and surrounding mountains.

This rest day is important for safety before continuing toward Samdo, Dharamsala, and Larkya La Pass.

• Altitude: Dharamsala / Larkya Phedi – approx. 4,460m / 14,633ft
• Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

Mitchedberg

An amazing experience – went trekking with 14 others in March / April 2025 and had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Badri and his crew for taking care of every logistical detail; flights, hotels, transportation in Kathmandu, transportation to and from the airport, money exchanges, restaurant reservations, sightseeing, optimal route pacing, gear transportation, and 100 other small details that would have left me flummoxed.

He and his team allow for a trek that’s as simplified as possible, you can focus your energy on getting to base camp, and they do everything else. They even bring you hot towels and lemon ginger tea at the end of each day (every morning too). I can’t say enough good things about the porters / guides, they were unbelievable, true heroes of our trip. We had some very unique challenges in our group, and without expert guides and porters we would absolutely not have had the same high quality experience. When I go back to Nepal for a second trek, I’m calling Badri. Badri is the guide you want – generous, personal, and you can tell he and his team deeply care about the well-being of their clients.

One more thing: Not once, but twice, Badri got our entire group flown from Kathmandu to Lukla (and back) on days when the weather was uncooperative. Both times, there was only a brief window when the clouds cleared — just enough for a single plane to make the journey — and guess whose plane was first in line? Even more impressive: while we were waiting at the airport, Badri already had a backup helicopter option lined up, just in case the planes didn’t fly. This kind of foresight and preparation gave us total peace of mind.

An incredible hike with an amazing group of people. Badri managed to get us in and out of Lukla on days when we thought flights may not be possible and he tried his very best to accommodate the needs of the group. The team of porters supporting Karen Darke were out of this world and did an incredible job, with big smiles. Wonderful people. The trek itself was incredible and we had fantastic weather during the whole trip. Although the ‘B Team’ snail ed it, we had an excellent adventure thanks to Badri and his very supportive team.

Clare B

Badri and his team of wonderful porters organised and supported our amazing trek to Everest Base Camp in March/April 2025.
Helped by good weather, we had the most wonderful experience and each person within the group brought something special to what was a truly unique and awe inspiring experience. The porters (the Basnet family and others from the same village) were outstanding. Thankyou so much to everyone who played a part in what was a very memorable and emotional trip.
