Autumn, from September to November, is another best season. After the monsoon, the sky is often clear. Therefore, mountain views are usually better.
Nepal Tourism Board lists October–November and March–April as the best seasons for Makalu Barun National Park. It also notes that April–May can be hot at lower elevations, and June–September is monsoon season.
Winter is possible for experienced trekkers. However, it can be very cold at Khongma, Dobato, Langmale, and Base Camp.
Monsoon is less recommended. Rain, leeches, landslides, clouds, and muddy trails can affect the lower route.
Makalu Base Camp Trek Difficulty
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a challenging trek. It is remote and physically demanding.
You do not need climbing skills. However, you need good fitness, strong legs, and previous hiking experience.
The route has long walking days. Also, it includes steep climbs, rocky trails, forest paths, high ridges, and glacial valley sections.
The trek reaches around 4,870m at Makalu Base Camp. So, altitude is also a challenge. You should walk slowly, drink enough water, and follow your guide’s advice.
This 18-day itinerary is shorter than some longer Makalu routes. Therefore, it is best for fit trekkers. Extra acclimatization days are recommended if you have more time.
Makalu Base Camp Trek Permits
The Makalu Base Camp Trek lies inside Makalu Barun National Park. So, trekkers need the national park permit.
For this trek, travelers normally need:
• Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit
• Makalu Rural Municipality local permit, if required
• TIMS Card as per current trekking rules
• Licensed trekking guide
• Registered trekking agency support
Nepal Tourism Board lists the Makalu Barun National Park entrance fee as NPR 3,000 for foreigners, NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, and NPR 25 for Nepali visitors.
Some current permit guides also mention a Makalu Rural Municipality Permit for this trek. However, local permit rules can change. So, your trekking agency should confirm the latest local fee before booking.
A restricted-area permit is usually not needed for the standard Makalu Base Camp route. However, it may be needed if the itinerary enters restricted villages near the border area. Therefore, final permit details should be checked before the trek.
Your trekking agency should arrange permits, guide, flights, road transfers, lodges, and full trekking support.

An amazing experience – went trekking with 14 others in March / April 2025 and had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Badri and his crew for taking care of every logistical detail; flights, hotels, transportation in Kathmandu, transportation to and from the airport, money exchanges, restaurant reservations, sightseeing, optimal route pacing, gear transportation, and 100 other small details that would have left me flummoxed.
He and his team allow for a trek that’s as simplified as possible, you can focus your energy on getting to base camp, and they do everything else. They even bring you hot towels and lemon ginger tea at the end of each day (every morning too). I can’t say enough good things about the porters / guides, they were unbelievable, true heroes of our trip. We had some very unique challenges in our group, and without expert guides and porters we would absolutely not have had the same high quality experience. When I go back to Nepal for a second trek, I’m calling Badri. Badri is the guide you want – generous, personal, and you can tell he and his team deeply care about the well-being of their clients.
One more thing: Not once, but twice, Badri got our entire group flown from Kathmandu to Lukla (and back) on days when the weather was uncooperative. Both times, there was only a brief window when the clouds cleared — just enough for a single plane to make the journey — and guess whose plane was first in line? Even more impressive: while we were waiting at the airport, Badri already had a backup helicopter option lined up, just in case the planes didn’t fly. This kind of foresight and preparation gave us total peace of mind.
