Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking – 16 Days

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking package is a beautiful 16-day high-altitude trekking adventure in Nepal that combines the classic Annapurna Circuit route with the magical turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. This trek is perfect for travelers who want dramatic Himalayan landscapes, Tibetan-influenced villages, high mountain scenery, sacred places, and a challenging side trip to Tilicho Lake.

Tilicho Lake is located in the Manang district of Nepal inside the Annapurna range. Nepal Tourism Board’s official Photo Nepal platform lists Tilicho Lake at 4,919m / 16,138ft, and NTB also mentions Tilicho Lake as a scenic trekking area in the Manang–Mustang section of Gandaki Province.

This 16-day Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking package begins in Kathmandu and follows the Annapurna Circuit route through Dharapani, Chame, Upper Pisang, Manang, Khangsar, Tilicho Base Camp, Tilicho Lake, Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi, Thorong La Pass, Muktinath, Jomsom, Pokhara, and back to Kathmandu.

The trek offers stunning views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu peaks, Pisang Peak, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Manaslu. The journey combines green valleys, pine forests, ancient villages, dry alpine landscapes, high passes, sacred temples, and one of Nepal’s most beautiful high-altitude lakes.

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking – 16 Days is suitable for fit trekkers, adventure travelers, photographers, nature lovers, and international travelers from the USA, Australia, Canada, Europe, Asia, and worldwide who want a guided high-altitude Nepal trekking package with local experts.

Why Choose Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking?

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking package is one of the best adventure treks in Nepal because it combines two major Himalayan highlights: Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. Trekkers not only experience the classic Annapurna Circuit trail but also make a rewarding side trip to one of the world’s highest lakes.

This trek is more adventurous than the regular Annapurna Circuit because it includes the remote trail from Manang toward Khangsar, Tilicho Base Camp, and Tilicho Lake. The route to Tilicho Lake includes steep, dry, and sometimes exposed trail sections, so it feels wild and dramatic.

This trek is ideal for travelers looking for:

Best Time for Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking

The best time for Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking is spring and autumn.

Spring, from March to May, is a beautiful time for this trek. Lower sections are warmer, rhododendron forests may bloom in the Annapurna region, and the mountain views are often clear in the morning. The higher sections near Tilicho Base Camp, Tilicho Lake, Yak Kharka, and Thorong La Pass can still be cold.

Autumn, from September to November, is the most popular season. After the monsoon, the sky is usually clearer, the air feels fresh, and the mountain views are sharp. Nepal Tourism Board lists March–May and September–November as the best seasons for the Annapurna Conservation Area.

This trek can also be possible in December and February for experienced trekkers with proper warm clothing, but snow and ice may affect the Tilicho Lake trail and Thorong La Pass. Monsoon season from June to August is greener and quieter, but rain, landslides, clouds, and slippery trails can affect the lower sections.

Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking Difficulty

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking route is a moderate to challenging trek. You do not need technical climbing skills, but you should be physically fit and prepared for long walking days, high altitude, steep climbs, cold weather, and exposed trail sections.

The trek reaches Tilicho Lake at 4,919m / 16,138ft and crosses Thorong La Pass at 5,416m / 17,769ft. Because the route goes above 5,000 meters, proper acclimatization is very important. Trekkers should walk slowly, drink enough water, eat properly, wear warm layers, and follow the guide’s advice.

The trail between Shree Kharka, Tilicho Base Camp, and Tilicho Lake is one of the most demanding sections. Some parts pass through dry landslide areas and narrow mountain paths. The Thorong La Pass crossing is also long, cold, and physically challenging.

This trek is suitable for fit beginners with preparation, but previous hiking or trekking experience is highly recommended.

Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking Permits

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking route lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so trekkers need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit / ACAP. NTNC’s official e-permit page lists the entry fee as NRs. 3,000 for foreigners and NRs. 1,000 for SAARC nationals, tax included. The permit must be carried during the whole trip and shown at checkpoints when requested.

Trekkers also need a TIMS Card and a licensed trekking guide arrangement under Nepal Tourism Board’s revised TIMS provision. NTB states that, from March 31, 2023, specific protected-area routes require trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and carry a trekking-agency-issued TIMS Card. NTB lists Annapurna Circuit Trek and Mesokanto / Tilicho Pass Trek under the Annapurna Region routes covered by this rule, and lists TIMS fees as NPR 1,000 for SAARC applicants and NPR 2,000 for others.

Your trekking agency should help arrange ACAP, TIMS, guide, transportation, accommodation, and trek logistics before the journey begins.

After breakfast, the trekking journey begins. The trail follows the Marsyangdi River valley and passes through forests, villages, waterfalls, and mountain viewpoints. You will walk through settlements such as Bagarchhap, Danaque, Timang, and Koto before reaching Chame.

Chame is the district headquarters of Manang and a beautiful mountain town with views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. This day gives the first strong feeling of the Annapurna Circuit landscape.

Upper Pisang is a traditional village with beautiful mountain views and Tibetan-influenced culture. From here, you can see Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, and surrounding Himalayan scenery. Staying in Upper Pisang also helps with better acclimatization before reaching Manang.

The trail climbs to Ghyaru and continues to Ngawal, both traditional villages with stone houses, prayer flags, chortens, and mountain views. From Ngawal, the trail continues toward Braga, famous for its old monastery, and then reaches Manang.

This route is more demanding than the lower route, but it offers better mountain scenery and better acclimatization.

Altitude: Ghyaru – approx. 3,670m / 12,040ft; Ngawal – approx. 3,660m / 12,008ft; Manang – approx. 3,500m / 11,480ft
Trek Time: Approx. 7–8 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 07: Acclimatization Day in Manang

Today is an important acclimatization day in Manang. Because the trek has reached above 3,500 meters, your body needs time to adjust before going higher toward Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.

You can take a short acclimatization hike to Gangapurna Lake, Bhojo Gompa, or a nearby viewpoint depending on weather and group condition. Manang is also a good place to learn about altitude safety, rest, enjoy mountain views, and explore local culture.

This rest day helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness before the trek continues toward Khangsar, Tilicho Base Camp, and higher elevations.

Altitude: Manang – approx. 3,500m / 11,480ft
Activity Time: Approx. 2–4 hours light hike and exploration

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 08: Trek from Manang to Shree Kharka via Khangsar

After breakfast, you will leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail and head toward the Tilicho Lake side route. The trail passes through the old village of Khangsar and continues into a quieter valley.

As you walk toward Shree Kharka, the landscape becomes drier and more dramatic. The trail offers views of Tilicho Peak, Gangapurna, and surrounding mountains. Shree Kharka is a peaceful overnight stop before moving toward Tilicho Base Camp.

Altitude: Khangsar – approx. 3,734m / 12,251ft; Shree Kharka – approx. 4,060m / 13,320ft
Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 09: Trek from Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp

Today, you will trek from Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp. This is one of the most adventurous sections of the Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking route.

The trail passes through dry slopes, rocky paths, and landslide-prone areas. You should walk carefully and follow your guide’s instructions, especially in exposed sections. The scenery is rugged and beautiful, with dramatic cliffs and high Himalayan landscapes.

Tilicho Base Camp is a remote tea house settlement below the route to Tilicho Lake. You will rest here before the early morning hike to the lake.

Altitude: Tilicho Base Camp – approx. 4,150m / 13,615ft
Trek Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10: Hike to Tilicho Lake and Trek Back to Shree Kharka

Today is one of the most important and rewarding days of the trek. You will start early in the morning and hike toward Tilicho Lake. The trail climbs steadily through a high alpine landscape with thin air, cold wind, and amazing mountain scenery.

After reaching Tilicho Lake at 4,919m / 16,138ft, you can enjoy the stunning turquoise lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks and rugged Himalayan terrain. This is the main highlight of the Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trekking package.

After spending time at the lake, you will descend back to Tilicho Base Camp for rest or lunch and continue to Shree Kharka for overnight stay. The day is long and challenging, but the experience is unforgettable.

Altitude: Tilicho Lake – approx. 4,919m / 16,138ft; Shree Kharka – approx. 4,060m / 13,320ft
Trek Time: Approx. 7–8 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Trek from Shree Kharka to Yak Kharka

After breakfast, you will leave the Tilicho Lake side trail and reconnect with the Annapurna Circuit route. The trail passes through high mountain landscapes, dry valleys, and yak grazing areas.

You will walk slowly and steadily because the route remains at high altitude. Yak Kharka is a common overnight stop before moving toward Thorong Phedi. This day helps you return to the main trail while maintaining a good acclimatization pace.

Altitude: Yak Kharka – approx. 4,050m / 13,287ft
Trek Time: Approx. 5–6 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12: Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi

Today, you will trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi. The trail passes through Letdar and continues across high alpine terrain, narrow paths, river crossings, and landslide-prone sections where careful walking is important.

Thorong Phedi is the main overnight stop before crossing Thorong La Pass. Some trekkers continue to High Camp, but Thorong Phedi is often preferred for safer sleeping altitude. Your guide will check your condition, weather, and trail safety before deciding the best plan.

Altitude: Letdar – approx. 4,200m / 13,780ft; Thorong Phedi – approx. 4,540m / 14,900ft
Trek Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 13: Cross Thorong La Pass and Trek to Muktinath

Today is the most challenging high-pass day of the trek. You will start very early in the morning and climb slowly toward Thorong La Pass. The trail can be cold, windy, snowy, and physically demanding depending on the season and weather.

After reaching Thorong La Pass at 5,416m / 17,769ft, you can enjoy a proud moment at the highest point of the journey. The pass offers wide views of the Annapurna and Mustang landscapes. After taking photos and enjoying the view, you will descend carefully toward Muktinath.

Muktinath is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. After a long descent, you will rest at a local lodge in Muktinath.

Altitude: Thorong La Pass – approx. 5,416m / 17,769ft; Muktinath – approx. 3,800m / 12,470ft
Trek Time: Approx. 8–10 hours

  • Lodging: Tea House / Lodge
  • Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 14: Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara via Jomsom

After breakfast, you will visit the Muktinath area if time allows and then drive toward Jomsom. The route follows the Kali Gandaki Valley through dry Mustang landscapes, river valleys, traditional villages, and changing mountain scenery.

You may pass through Kagbeni, Jomsom, Marpha, Tukuche, Kalopani, Ghasa, and Beni depending on road conditions. The drive can be long and bumpy, but the scenery is beautiful. After arrival in Pokhara, you can rest at your hotel, enjoy a hot shower, walk around Lakeside, and celebrate the successful completion of the trek.

An amazing experience – went trekking with 14 others in March / April 2025 and had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Badri and his crew for taking care of every logistical detail; flights, hotels, transportation in Kathmandu, transportation to and from the airport, money exchanges, restaurant reservations, sightseeing, optimal route pacing, gear transportation, and 100 other small details that would have left me flummoxed.

He and his team allow for a trek that’s as simplified as possible, you can focus your energy on getting to base camp, and they do everything else. They even bring you hot towels and lemon ginger tea at the end of each day (every morning too). I can’t say enough good things about the porters / guides, they were unbelievable, true heroes of our trip. We had some very unique challenges in our group, and without expert guides and porters we would absolutely not have had the same high quality experience. When I go back to Nepal for a second trek, I’m calling Badri. Badri is the guide you want – generous, personal, and you can tell he and his team deeply care about the well-being of their clients.

One more thing: Not once, but twice, Badri got our entire group flown from Kathmandu to Lukla (and back) on days when the weather was uncooperative. Both times, there was only a brief window when the clouds cleared — just enough for a single plane to make the journey — and guess whose plane was first in line? Even more impressive: while we were waiting at the airport, Badri already had a backup helicopter option lined up, just in case the planes didn’t fly. This kind of foresight and preparation gave us total peace of mind.

An incredible hike with an amazing group of people. Badri managed to get us in and out of Lukla on days when we thought flights may not be possible and he tried his very best to accommodate the needs of the group. The team of porters supporting Karen Darke were out of this world and did an incredible job, with big smiles. Wonderful people. The trek itself was incredible and we had fantastic weather during the whole trip. Although the ‘B Team’ snail ed it, we had an excellent adventure thanks to Badri and his very supportive team.

Badri and his team of wonderful porters organised and supported our amazing trek to Everest Base Camp in March/April 2025.
Helped by good weather, we had the most wonderful experience and each person within the group brought something special to what was a truly unique and awe inspiring experience. The porters (the Basnet family and others from the same village) were outstanding. Thankyou so much to everyone who played a part in what was a very memorable and emotional trip.
